Four of the best educational activities for children in Orlando

Space Shuttle Atlantis at Kennedy Space Center

There is so much to see and do in Orlando! With this in mind, we thought we'd give a mention to these places which are great fun as well as interesting and educational; so you can squeeze some learning for the little ones (or the ever-inquisitive!), whilst on your epic holiday in Florida.

WonderWorks

With six Wonder Zones - Natural Disasters, Physical Challenge, Light and Sound, Space Discovery, Imagination Lab and Far Out Gallery - the discoveries awaiting you and opportunities to learn are countless! With more than 100 hands-on exhibits, imaginations will run wild and amazement will be aplenty.

Within the Natural Disasters Zone you will find Earthquake Café, where you’ll be able to feel the power behind an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale. There is also the Hurricane Shack which you can step inside and feel the sensation of a category one hurricane with 74mph winds! Another zone that we love and recommend is the Space Discovery Zone. Get the opportunity to explore a life-size model of a spacesuit, which astronauts wear when doing work outside a spacecraft.

SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium

Learn all about the fantastic creatures that live underwater at SEA LIFE Aquarium in Orlando. With more than 5,000 species from three different oceans, there is plenty to explore! We recommend you allocate a minimum of two hours to get around the aquarium, but you can make a day of it if you want to see all the talks and feeding times, where you can find out even more about each creature.

SEA LIFE also offer interactive dive shows in their ocean habitats. Watch the divers interact with the incredible animals and learn about how the SEA LIFE team take care of the thousands of resident sea creatures. The aquarium’s pièce de résistance is the 360-degree tunnel where you walk through a passageway, surrounded above, below and to either side by the many fish, sharks, turtles and eels which are swimming around.

Kennedy Space Center

Visit Florida’s gateway to the cosmos, where families have been learning about space exploration for decades. The complex is organised into Mission Zones and the attractions and tours are categorised in chronological order, so you don’t have to miss a thing! One of the zones is called “Behind The Gates”; in this section of the park, you gain access to famous launch sites and working space flight facilities. You’ll have the opportunity to travel to this area via the Kennedy Space Center Bus, with the tour being about a 40-minute ride around the sections – you’ll even be able to see the Apollo 8 launch site and a Saturn V rocket.

Another brilliant section of Kennedy Space Center is “Shuttle: A Ship Like No Other” - this is one to remember! The actual space shuttle Atlantis calls this place home. Learn how to dock and land the shuttle with training simulators, and then have a go on the Shuttle Launch Experience.

Our final suggestion is “NASA Now + Next”, where you can learn all about current missions, as well as what they are attempting to achieve in the future! The IMAX is also found in this zone; this gives you the chance to view Earth like an astronaut in space. Realistically, you could spend a few days at Kennedy Space Center, but it can certainly be done in a day, you will just need to plan what you want to see and do ahead of your visit!

Gatorland

Gatorland is an animal experience that will live with you forever! From a free-flight aviary to a petting zoo, there is lots to see and get involved with here. The main attractions are the alligators and crocodiles - from babies to 14ft in size, you can see a whole variety when visiting Gatorland. There are also some great shows where you are given the chance to learn more about the animals.

Want to see someone take to the stage with a six-to-eight-foot alligator? “Alligators: Legends of the Swamp” is a show that demonstrates the fascinating survival features of this legendary creature! We advise taking the chance to get up-close with the remarkable creatures from all around the world, including some of the most dangerous snakes alive – after all, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Some of the other animals you can expect to see here are wild cats, birds, snakes and tortoises.
