Bioluminescent Kayaking in Florida
During the summer months the warm waters of the Indian River Lagoon shine brightly after the sun sets - the best way to see this natural nighttime spectacle is on a kayaking tour.
Located on the Indian River Lagoon at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, this once-in-a-lifetime experience is one of only a few places in the world to see bioluminescence. It is only an hours drive away from our Orlando villas and is a great area to enjoy a full day trip in Florida, as it’s close to Kennedy Space Center, Canaveral National Seashore and Cocoa Beach.
There are a few kayaking companies located around the Indian River who provide these bioluminescent kayaking tours, including BK Adventure, A Day Away Kayak Tours and Get Up and Go Kayaking.
What Causes Bioluminescence?
The glowing effect you see on the waters of the Indian River Lagoon at night is known as bioluminescence and is the emission of light by a living organism, from creatures such as comb jellyfish and plankton (dinoflagellates). When the organisms move in the water they emit light, which is why kayaking is ideal for this experience; the swirling of your hand, every paddle stroke, and the rolling wake off of your kayak all help create this sparkle throughout the darkness. Many guests compare this experience to Pandora World of Avatar at Walt Disney World.
When is The Best Time to See Bioluminescence?
Bioluminescence can be seen all year long, however for the best experience it can depend on the time of year and what phase the moon is in. For the most outstanding view of the glowing plankton, consider going anytime between June and October, when the water is warmer and the plankton multiply in “blooms". In the winter months, the bioluminescence is produced by comb jellies, as the colder water makes them rise to the surface. In certain months where the seasons overlap, you are often able to see both of the creatures within the water!
The darkest nights are the most optimal time to see bioluminescence, when the moon is not totally visible. Take a look at a lunar calendar and book within the week surrounding a new moon, for the best experience. There will be no moonlight reflecting on the water, so you can see these marine organisms at their brightest. The guides on these tours are trained to take you to areas where you are most likely to see the bioluminescent creatures, so if you aren’t able to book on or around the new moon, you know you’ll still have a dazzling time.
The darker the nights, the more stars you will be able to see in the sky as well, offering the most magical experience, with the glowing waters and sparkling skies!
Nightly Kayaking Tours of the Indian River
These tours are very popular in Florida and depart nightly throughout the year, offering you a good chance to get this experience booked for your holiday in Orlando.
Clear Kayaking Tours in Florida
To add to this extraordinary encounter, the kayaking companies here also offer clear kayaking tours, so you get to see the bioluminescence sparkling right underneath you!
Family Friendly Bioluminescent Rafting Tours
At BK Adventure, they also provide rafting tours, so the whole family can enjoy the experience. This is great for families with smaller children or those who feel more comfortable in a bigger boat. Leave the steering to the guides, so you can sit back for the evening and enjoy the wonderful view.
This is the only bioluminescent tour in Florida that is not in a kayak, so be sure to book early if this is the type of tour you would prefer.

What You Should Bring for a Nighttime Kayaking Tour
- Insect repellent - it helps to spray bug spray underneath your clothing as another form of protection, especially if you are more prone to being bitten.
- Quick dry clothes and a towel - you may get a little wet on the tour as the paddles tend to splash some water into your kayak. A change of clothes may also be handy for after your tour.
- Water shoes - or shoes that you don’t mind getting wet.
- A camera that shoots well in low light - so that you can capture the most beautiful photos of your once-in-a-lifetime experience.
- Water - you’ll be exercising your arms during this tour, so it’s good to stay hydrated and keep your energy up.
